Yeah....remember 17 years ago, and it was announced that an American film studio was gonna make a Godzilla movie, using effects on par with Jurassic Park? Remember the disappointment from fans and casual film goers a year later when the most memorable scenes were the scenes that were ripped off from Jurassic Park and the one line "That's a lot of fish"? Lets talk about that shall we?

Before I go any further, I want to stress, that as a movie on its own, Godzilla 98' is an okay movie, the effects for the time were really good and it was your basic monster on the loose story, but as James Rolfe(AVGN) and many other critics said before, if they called it something other than Godzilla it wouldn't have too much of a problem, hell, title aside the one thing that keeps me from liking this movie any more than I do is the two main leads, Nick and Audrey, who are terrible characters played by awful actors, but I'll talk about them when I get to them so without any further ado, lets get started.

Just because it did well in the box office doesn't mean it's good- This is something that a lot of die hard fans of this movie(by die hard I mean fans who think that Zilla is better than Godzilla) bring up that on it's opening weekend, Godzilla 98' made $55,726,951 in the box office, that's all fine and dandy adjust for inflation by today's standards it would of made about $81 million, but that said it didn't meet the numbers the studio predicted (beating out The Lost World Jurassic Park which was at the time the film with the highest box office numbers on its opening weekend) and the reception from fans and critics alike was scathing, so much so that if there was a sequel to this movie, then it would be a bomb on par with movies today like The Last Airbender and Dragonball Evolution and even as a kid, (who was really into Godzilla) I was pissed off when I saw this movie the first time, mainly because Zilla was a total pussy but now that I'm older there's other things that piss me off about this movie. And for those who still think being financially successful equals a good movie, then look at a film by Michael Bay, the Twilight Movies, and the Resident Evil movies and tell me again how that's possible.

Fuck, the human characters are annoying It's been 16 years, we can drop the thing about Zilla not being Godzilla, Toho bought the character and renamed him back in 2004, but as bad at being Godzilla Zilla was, he was still the best thing in this movie, way better than the human characters, my god. It'd be one thing if the characters were bland and just like your typical monster movie cast, but nope, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin decides to give us Matthew Broderick in that stupid beret, that blonde reporter bitch, Sam's dad from Bayformers, hell the animated series when it came out it made sure that the characters looked NOTHING like their actor counterparts and blonde reporter bitch and Animal are side characters that should tell you something about the movie, hell as I said, aside from Nick and Audrey, as annoying the characters are, they're alright, yes, they're annoying as hell, but they fit their roles, the gung ho soldiers, the nerdy scientists, the mysterious government agent, they did their jobs, but Nick and Audrey.......Nick is a fucking non entity, who was about as useful as Sam from Bayformers, and Audrey is a colossal bitch, she ruined Nick's career and life, STOLE government property, puts herself and Animal in danger by going into the nest and she really didn't need to be there other than to be the dumbass in distress for Nick to save.

It's nothing special, the movie is just generic The movie was alright but as a lot of people said, you'd slap any other title on this movie, call the monster anything else, and it wouldn't be that different, if you called this the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms or Gorgo, or the Giant Behemoth, it'd be the same movie, if Zilla was more like Godzilla in both how it acted and how it looked, even with all of the other problems, it wouldn't of gotten the reaction from fans and critics that it did but it wouldn't be anything special, hell we'd probably still have gotten the 2014 reboot even if a sequel or even trilogy were made.

Zilla is not Godzilla, and never will be I know this has been said to death, but there are still some people, (particularly a certain deviant on this site who I wont name but he knows who he is) who want to call Zilla, Godzilla, and that's just not true, Toho bought the character, they renamed him and that makes it official, DC renamed their Captain Marvel to Shazam, this isn't me as a fan who hates the character of Zilla so much that I refuse to call him Godzilla, I'm just telling you the truth

Godzilla 2014 will always be the only American Godzilla film to beat zilla.
